ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES
DESCRIPTION:

This module contributes to the graduate profile by developing in students the skill of producing English language for academic and formal purposes, so that they can write in a clear and effective manner and adhere to the standards that rule the production of formal written genres. Additionally, they should be able to present and argue ideas in oral English following the standards of formal oral discourse.


LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of the module, students should be able to

  1. identify the common functions of academic text writing, recognize the relationships and purposes established by discursive patterns and textual markers in English, and use this knowledge in the proper generation of academic discourse.
  2. understand and apply the principles that rule the productions of written and oral academic discourse in English.
  3. master surface levels, recognize logical-semantic thought structure and organizational criteria of texts, and use this knowledge as guiding principles in the production of written and oral research reports.
